Center For Working Families

Human Development

Center for Working Families is our general adult education programming. Here, all of the pieces (or rooms) of the Flanner House can come together: education, housing, workforce development, food, justice and mental health. These things are all interconnected and essential to supporting an individual, a family and a community. We provide education, skill development and assistance to members of our community who are unemployed, underemployed or are considering or contemplating a career change.

People who come to the Center for Working Families will be connected to every other room of the Flanner House (and vice versa for any of our other programs). It is one thing to land a job. It’s another thing to skill up to develop a career. It’s even better when we can help each other become self-sustaining with intentional access to work, food, housing, education and mental health services.

Community Asset Development

Sustainable Development starts with elevating the physical, intellectual, and emotional well-being of the community. We focus our work on an asset-based approach to human services and development that places people over property. Community asset development emphasizes the development of the whole family and community at large.

Senior Services

There is an old African saying that says that when an elder in your community dies, a library burns to the ground. Because there is so much to learn from and experience with our elders, Flanner House has well-established Senior Services programming to keep the elder members of our community connected to each other and the younger generations. We provide opportunities for socialization, movement, and the comfort of a place where they can gather with others through planned activities.
BOA ME NA ME MMOA WO
Adinkra Meaning
This is the symbol of cooperation and interdependence. The literal translation is “Help me and let me help you”. The heart of human development initiatives at Flanner House focuses on the communal and reciprocal nature of support. Our community is resilient and through the Center for Working Families and our Child Development Center, we keep generations connected to one another to strengthen the whole.
