Culturally Informed Mental Health Care

Morningstar Afrocentric Wellness Center provides a safe pathway for receiving mental health services. We are intentional about serving black and brown faces, with folks who understand brown and black faces. In every community, there are commonalities, shared experiences, and unspoken understandings that can be a barrier for many to mental health services. Our trauma and culturally informed approaches mean clients can start their journey from a place of understanding.

Black men have to work 19 times harder than their white female counterparts to find access to mental health care. They are 20 times more likely to be misdiagnosed. They’re 30 times more likely to be mis-medicated because of that misdiagnosis. We found this to be unacceptable, so the team at Flanner House decided our community would take our mental health into our own hands.

Located in a comforting home environment adjacent to the Flanner House campus, Morningstar removes the institutional feeling often associated with mental health services. Morningstar counselors, mentors and practitioners provide clients an opportunity to address their trauma and heal in a safe space. We provide temporary housing, teen programing and access to proven guidance and therapy from certified professionals to individuals and families.
